Past Security

People wander up and down the mall displays, pulling trolleys, holding newspapers under their coats, looking idly at the television screens. Forced by routine to ignore the thrill of the leisure travelers, business men and women carry in their eyes an expression of suspended alertness. The unaccompanied stroll unnoted or are seen staring with abandonment into their mobile phones and Blackberrys as if their physical reality would have come to a halt.

A Frenchman in business casual is trying on a stripped scarf: He walks towards what looks to be his work colleague, allowing the wool to bounce playfully on his chest. He makes an effort to look casual and relaxed “I’ve never bought one of these, but I quite like them. With this jacket ... no?”. The Anglo-Saxon lady looks slightly distressed behind her thin smile, as if realising their asymmetrical sense of fellowship is making them both uncomfortable. Behind the counter a vigilant young girl is looking up, holding with her index finger the half-read page of a thick paperback novel.
